Problem 14-41

A conjugate system is an acid and a base that differ in structure by only 1 H+

for example:

HCl / Cl-
It is a conjugate system where HCl is the acid and Cl is the base
HCl is the conjugate acid of the base Cl
or
HCl is the acid of the conjugate base Cl

Other examples of conjugate system:
HClO / ClO
NH3 / NH4+
H2CO3 / HCO3

The following are not conjugate systems:
H2SO4 / SO42− (more than 1 H+ difference)
HClO3 / HClO2 (not the same anion)
